A metallic voice, that can sing both lyric and dramatic phrases, a manly noble baritonal color; most on-stage roles in this Fach call for good looks. Not quite as vocally powerful as the Verdi baritone or Charakterbariton, who is expected to have a powerful, perhaps muscular or physically large, appearance on stage and has a harsher, more pronounced than the lyric baritone or Spielbariton.

Celesta is a struck idiophone operated by a four or five octaves keyboard, like an upright piano with smaller keys and a much smaller cabinet. The keys connect to hammers that strike a graduated set of metal (usually steel) plates or bars suspended over wooden resonators. Celesta usually have a damper pedal that sustains or damps the sound.

Electric instrument combining bass and guitar, played with tapping technic. Bass strings are inverted, so the lowest notes are in the middle of the neck, allowing deep bass and medium chords accompaniment by one hand, and the melody by the other hand.

Found especially in Rossini's operas, these roles were written originally for altos with agility and secure top notes. Today they are often played by mezzo-sopranos and sometimes even by sopranos. At times a lyric or full lyric soprano with a flexible voice will assume the roles as written while a true coloratura soprano will sing the same music transposed to a higher key.

The Cretan lyra may have same ancestor than Politiki lyra, the Byzantine lyra.
There are 3 variants of Cretan lyra: lyraki (the smallest), vrontolyra (strong sound, for song accompaniment) and common lyra (tuned in fifths like violin).
In 1990, Ross Daly designed a new type which incorporates elements of lyraki, the Byzantine lyra and the Indian sarangi. The result was a lyra with three playing strings and 22 sympathetic strings.
